Lily’s family is home to two humans and three dachshunds. Two were adopted and they have added to the Sweeney home their happy, funny, and charming personalities. Lily is thankful every day for the ownership of their pets, and the wonderful SPCA that brought them into their lives! The SPCA in Hancock Maine takes in, spays, and re-homes over 600 cats a year. Wow! is that making her pooches bark, and bark, and bark!
How to help? When life gives you batting scraps, and tons of fabric, the answer is easy. Cat Beds! Each cat bed is 18 inches by 40 inches. How to make a cat bed:
1. Fold the fabric and sew it like a pillow case, double sew each side for strength.
2. Fill each cat bed 2/3rd's of the way up, with cut up fabric leftovers, and batting.
3. Sew the pillowcase/cat bed shut and it’s finished.
To date Lily has donated 18 cat beds, and looking at her stash, she sees many more to come and she hopes these cats stay warm and comfortable until they find their forever homes.

Mary of QuiltingGranny in Lincoln, Nebraska donated placemats as part

Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Summit Medical Center, Hermitage Animal Clinic, and Nashboro Family Dental were some of the organizations she sent handmade masks to, as well as her entire family, work colleagues, delivery persons making deliveries to her home, neighbors, and her neighborhood postal worker.

Judith Messenger of FabriArts in Toronto, Ontario, Canada donated cotton face masks, scrub caps, and isolation gowns to Sew4TO and other local clinics. She responded to the call in the spring of last year asking local sewists to make cloth masks for hospitals and front line workers. Having a large stash of cotton fabric on hand, she started making masks to donate. A group called "Sew4TO" (TO is often used to refer to Toronto) formed to coordinate efforts to get donations of supplies, and fulfill requests for masks, scrub caps and earsaver headbands. A local clinic also asked if she could make some fabric isolation gowns. Much of her time in the spring and early summer was spent making items for the various groups and for family members and friends. Even with making over 300 masks, a couple of dozen scrub caps and gowns, and donating fabric cut to size for at least 250 more masks, her stash hasn't seemed to shrink as much as she expected.

Jane Weier of MulberryPatchQuilts in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin made over 300 masks her doctor’s clinic, local EMTs, medical techs where her cousin works, nurses, and her family and friends.
Here we go again! No one likes a challenge more than Quiltsy.

How many of you have piles and boxes of scrapes from all the projects and quilted items you have made? I know, some day you are going to organize and finally make something using those scraps and left over remnants of projects past. But what if you were actually challenged to make something?

That's actually happened in June. Quiltsy Team challenged it's members to use their scrapes and left over pieces of fabric to create a table runner, table topper or a wall hanging. The only thing that could be new or purchased was the border and backing fabric. The middle and rest of the quilt top had to be made from only their scraps.

Thirty six members rose to the challenge and made exceptional quilted items from their scraps. Most used just their scraps only to make a quilted item. And looking at them you will be amazed that they were made from scraps. Might make you want to dig into your own scraps and see what you can come up with.

So on to the voting of which 3 you like the best. To vote, please leave a comment and include the numbers of your 3 favorites in your comments. On July 19th we will announce the 3 top ones that got your votes and which was was the over all favorite.

***Please note that the submissions for the challenge are closed only. Do not click onto the "visitor" link. Just leave your 3 choices in a comment below.
She sent the following information about her donation:

York Heritage Quilters Guild is the largest quilt guild in the Greater Toronto Area. With over 250 members, we have many members that like to give back to the community, and that initiative is organized by our Community Quilting group. The group accepts quilts, quilt tops and fabric donations from the guild members. Donated fabrics are used to create kits for members to take home to sew and also used by the group to make quilts. The group also sandwiches quilt tops with batting and backing for members to take home to quilt. The finished quilts are donated to various group - women's shelters, refugee families, children's groups and organizations that want to use a quilt for fundraising.

As well as giving back to the community, I enjoy being a member of the community quilting group that meets once a week. While sewing, sandwiching quilts and preparing for our annual Community Night for the general guild, friendships are created and ideas are exchanged. Many hands make light work, and some days we sandwich as many as 12 quilts! There are always lively discussions while we stop to eat our lunch - I think we could solve many world problems if we were in charge.

I used fabric from the Community Quilt "stash" to make this quilt. I loved the sunny yellow fabrics and I found enough greens to coordinate with those yellows. Once I was finished the top, the group helped me sandwich it, and I took it home to quilt and bind it.
Her donation went to a great cause - here is what she said about her donations:

The quilts I donated this year went to three families who were burned out in the Paradise, CA, wildfires last summer. One of the members of my local church is related to a burnout victim who worked at a clinic there. Three families of folks who worked at the same clinic lost everything in the fires.

My local church, Hope Lutheran Church in Eagle, Idaho, organized a donation drive to help replace household objects for those families. Our small congregation filled a big trailer with household goods. I watched in horror the news clips of the fires in California and I just couldn’t wrap my head around someone losing everything in a wildfire like that. So when I heard about the church’s drive, it was very easy to send quilts for the families.

Carol donated three quilts--two twin-size and one queen bed quilt.

I am sending off 2 doll quilts with matching pillows to A Doll Like Me. I want to support Amy J. in her mission to make handmade dolls that resemble the physical differences of their new little people.

Amy was a hospital oncology social worker who used dolls with her patients in play therapy. She noticed that she was using very normal looking dolls to explain some very real physical problems that her patients were enduring.

She had a light bulb moment of “ wouldn’t it be great to have a doll that looks like my patients “. And her mission was born.

I want to support Amy to help bring a little more love along with her dolls when they are delivered to their new owners with a brand new handmade doll quilt. And mine come with pillows!
Her Etsy shop is Aunti JoJo's. Mary Jo is from Mukwonago, in southeastern Wisconsin.

Her charity is the Veteran's Hospital, Milwaukee, WI. You can read her story about her donation below:

"The VA hospital is special to me because it's where I worked for 18 years after graduating from high school. I decide to work a couple of years to save money for college, but after working a couple of years I found my career. I began in a pool of administrative clerks and provided help as need in a variety of departments in the hospital. Within a year and a half I secured a position in Medical Administration working in the outpatient and Admitting departments. I stayed there and left the VA as Supervisor of Admitting, Outpatient Clinic and Compensation and Pension Departments. The VA was very good to me. I loved the care and compassion that was provided to our veterans and proud to part of it. There is a special place in my heart for the Veteran's Administration Care facilities. My grandfather and father, uncles were veterans.
Jump to the present time: My husband and I now own and manage a Downhill Ski race team with children ages 6 to 18 at our local ski resort. It's a way we've carried on our passion for skiing and train athletes to become ski racers. A coach, named Mark, we hired a few years ago was referred to us by one of our families. They mentioned he was a Veteran of the Vietnam war and sustained a head injury while in service and experiences short-term memory problems. Most of my years at the VA was caring for our special Vietnam veterans. Mark has turned out to be our best coach ever who works with the youngest athletes on our team. He is loved by the athletes [all ages] our other coaches and parents.

Mark also teaches art therapy sessions at the VA Hospital now helping other veterans. I approached him in December of 2018 and told him I wanted to donate this quilt to the VA Hospital and asked if he could help me make sure a female veteran received the quilt who would enjoy it for a long time. I mentioned female veteran because most of the prints in the quilt have flowers.
Mark was thrilled to help me and took the quilt to the VA in January and told me through one of the Veteran's organizations that works with the VA Hospital the quilt was given to a female Vietnam veteran. Mission accomplished. Smiles by all.
My quilt measures: Width 42" x Length 55"
The quilt made with beautiful fabrics BY Sandy Gervais line called ZIPPITY DOO DAH for MODA fabrics. It's an "old" fabric line, but one of the first I bought years ago. Sandy Gervais is one of my favorite designers too."

Lovely quilt, and a lovely story. Thank you, Mary Jo!
Last fall and winter, my guild, Ties, Needles and Threads, gathered donations for Sweet Babies in St. Louis, MO. The guild, which meets in Glen Carbon, Illinois, is made up of women with a broad range of talents including sewing, quilting, embroidery, crochet, knitting, fabric art, and weaving. We had been searching for an opportunity to help supply newborns with needed items, but found most local hospitals no longer accept donations due to concerns about germs. We were especially pleased, then, to discover Sweet Babies - a non-profit group that gathers supplies for families of needy newborns to take home with them when they leave the hospital.

I made a baby quilt, bibs, and several sewn hats made from t-shirt fabric.
Over the course of a few months, our group donated over 300 items to this worthy organization including blankets, quilts, baby clothing, hats (lots of hats!), cases of diapers, bibs, and books. We were fortunate to get a tour of their facility when we delivered the items, and were very impressed with both their mission and dedication.

We donated this in Dad's memory. I've been a substitute usher for about 3 years, and some of the baskets were in sorry shape. I worked with Sr. Judy to get the baskets, and she suggested I embroider a patch to include Dad's info. "

"Charity events are so important in our society and the one that I donated a purse to is one of my favourites. Cancer touches so many people and the silent auction at the “Curl for Cancer Funspiel” (curling bonspiel) held in Salmon Arm, BC in November was a great one to support. I donated one of my unique handmade purses to this event ... the bright pink silk quilt block on the black linen purse had just the right bit of pizazz and I hope that the person who purchased it will enjoy using it as much as they feel good about supporting the Canadian Cancer Society."

"Meals on Wheels (MOW) delivers nutritious, delicious and affordable meals to a variety of groups, including: seniors, people with physical disabilities and cognitive impairments, individuals suffering from illnesses and recovering from surgeries, and those who need special dietary planning and assistance.
One of the quilt guilds to which I belong collects placemats to donate to Meals on Wheels. They are delivered to MOW clients during the holiday season."
Judith loves giving to this charity because: "It's wonderful to be able to give a bit of cheer to people who may be isolated during the holiday season."

"I belong to a number of quilting groups. Sometimes, "orphan" blocks will be donated to a group - blocks someone has made that don't fit with the project they are making, either by size or colour, or test blocks that are made to try out a project. I've taken many of the orphan blocks and made them into individual placemats.....the block size doesn't matter, as I add some borders around the block to make it rectangular. This year, I've created 18 placemats for Meals on Wheels."

Judith does her quilting in Toronto, Ontario Canada. Thanks Judith for your good work, and for your wonderful donations!
Her charity is helping children to help other children! Here is her story:

I'm donating a lap quilt to a local organization called "Small Things Matter." This is what they say about themselves:
"Our mission is to empower children of all ages with the belief that they can make a difference in our world by being kind and compassionate to others. We encourage them to do so by harnessing their talents to make a handcrafted item for children in hospitals and donating/hosting book drives for underserved children."
Today's quilter is Karen - her shop is Monkey Muffin. Here is what she has to say about her donations:

My name is Karen and I live in Sioux Falls, SD.

I am fortunate to belong to a group that serves the needs of the Lakota people of the Pine Ridge Reservation in southern South Dakota. 97% of the families of Pine Ridge live below the poverty level. Unemployment is 85%.

This year, I was able to provide 24 pillow cases as well as school supplies, art supplies, and books to the children of Pine Ridge.
