Star Light Star Bright..

Back in the Spring, Moda put out a call for quilters to help them with a charity project, called Just One Star. The basic idea was to make 100 quilts in 100 days to donate to the Quilts of Valor program for injured servicemen and women, using donated pieced star blocks. Moda planned to present the quilts, all based on a quilt flag pattern by designers Minick and Simpson on Flag Day, June 14th. They needed 1800 star blocks to make 100 quilts. So out went the call for volunteers.

Twenty-eight Quiltsy members joined in and sent their blocks. Most had so much fun creating, they made and sent multiple blocks. Each block was signed with the creator's name and town so the recipients would feel the love from all over.

We all know quilters are generous. Moda knew this, though they might not have realized HOW generous. Instead of 1800 star blocks, they received over 12,000 star blocks -- instead of 100 quilts, they have enough stars for 1,000 quilts. Isn't that awesome?

Quiltsy is starting a list of member quilters who are willing to help Moda finish up some of the remaining 900 quilts.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt in a Classic New England Town

Block NE-3 of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt project was made by Nancy of UniquelyNancy of the quaint New England town of Warren, Connecticut.

Originally part of Kent, its neighbor to the east, Warren was settled in 1737. In 1786 the western Connecticut town was incorporated and named for the Revolutionary War hero, General Joseph Warren, who was killed in the Battle of Bunker Hill. Even though for most of its history Warren has been an agricultural community, by 1810 Warren became known as an educational center with 5 private schools and an academy which produced 15 ministers and educators.

Warren lies in the highlands between the Housatonic River Valley and the basin of Lake Waramaug (a glacial lake of extraordinary clarity and beauty) which has been a recreational and tourist mecca since the early 19th century, once supporting 7 inns and now ringed by spacious summer homes with lawns sloping down to the water. You can drive, bike or run around the lake on winding town roads or camp, swim and canoe at Lake Waramaug State Park. Warren shares the lake with its neighbors that have all joined together to create watchdog groups dedicated to maintaining its water quality and monitoring its use to prevent incursion of invasive aquatic plants.

Warren center, consisting of the town hall, the grammar school, a general store and a liquor store, is dominated by its Congregational church which was built in 1818 on a knoll overlooking the village center. The church steeple features a clock visible for miles -- a clock that in the 20th century had stopped functioning until artist Eric Sloane organized a fall festival and auction to raise funds to restore it to working order. The festival has continued and still retails the flavor of Mr. Sloane's harvest fair and auction. Sloane, whose last studio was in Warren, is famous for his paintings of New England landscapes and barns which usually feature dramatic skies and weather formations. He is also well known for his massive mural of the American landscape and clouds and weather patterns above it which adorns the main gallery of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Collections of his early American tools and implements as well as a re-creation of working studio are permanently displayed at the nearby Sloane-Stanley Museum.

Today, Warren remains a very rural enclave with virtually no visible commercial center. It has recently undergone a modest housing boom as families from more suburban towns to the south have chosen a less crowded environment to raise their families.

Nancy has been a professional seamstress and costumer for over 20 years, though she has been sewing for 50 years! Nancy's focus is mainly on handbags and quilts. She loves using bright fabrics with unexpected color combinations. The new art quilts make Nancy's brain spin with new ideas.

Block SOUTH-3 of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt Project

Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Morganton, North Carolina is a gateway town to the mountains in the west and the economic centers in the east.

Natural beauty surrounds the area, providing a respite from city life and a great variety of outdoor recreational activities. Living and working in this idyllic place is Linda of SewUpScale, creator of Block SOUTH-3 of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt Project.

Rated the #1 retirement community by Retirement Living magazine, and one of the top 10 places to raise a family by Readers Digest, Morganton has a mix of culture, leisure activities and quality of life that make it a favorite with young and old alike. The city's downtown is filled with clothing stores, restaurants and antique stores.

Pisgah National Forest's eastern borders are west of town. Morganton is half an hour west of Hickory, North Carolina, an hour east of Asheville, North Carolina and an hour and a half north of Charlotte, North Carolina. Morganton's location gives it a great advantage of accesibility, while remaining a bit off the beaten path. Here is a beautiful nature blog about hiking in the area.

Local wildlife includes bald eagles, falcons, hawks, deer, bears, and turkey. There are four challenging golf courses in the area. The nearby 6,500 acre man-made Lake James provides boating, camping, sailing, skiiing and fishing opportunities. The pristine water from Lake James is the primary source of drinking water for every community along the Catawba River. The Catawba River is famous for trout fishing, rafting, tubing and canoeing pursuits. A 5-mile paved Greeway parallels the Catawba River where joggers, bikers, and walkers can enjoy the natural sites and wildlife. In season, cross country and downhill snow skiing are available less than an hour away in the upper Blue Ridge Mountain elevations near Boone.

The area also supports a strong arts culture, from musicians to painters, potters to scultors. Several arts galleries are located in downtown Morganton. The annual Tour d'Art fine arts show is held there showcasing visual, performing and culinary arts.

Linda has lived her whole life in and near the mountains of eastern Tennessee and western North Caroina. Linda has a special affinity for making things featuring mountain landscapes and outdoor scenes. Currently she concentrates on using a variety of fiber art techniques to make small landscapes within the genre known as fabric postcards.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt SW-3 from Sunny Scottsdale, Arizona

Scottsdale, Arizona is located in the Sonoran Desert -- a vibrant oasis bursting at the seams with unusual wildlife and vegetation, including 2,000 native plant species. Scottsdale is also home to Donna of DesertSkyQuilts, creator of the SW-3 Block of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt Project.

By day, Scottsdale's sunny skies and lush desert setting create an ideal backdrop for outdoor adventures, championship golf, relaxing spa treatments and lots of shopping. Due to the area's high concentration of full-service hotels and resorts, other major tourism-based industries flourish there too. Scottsdale claims to be the world's finest golf destination. It's a bold claim that they back up with nearly 200 area golf courses with 330+ days of sunshine a year.

Scottsdale's rich arts scene is brimming with Native, Western and Contemporary Arts. There are more than 100 galleries, making it one of the most concentrated collections in the US. Scottsdale is home to internationally acclaimed museums, architectural icons, renowned arts festivals, the country's longest running art walk, world-class performance spaces and an award-winning public art program that dot's the community's landscape with striking statues and dramatic fountains.

Frank Lloyd Wright originally visited Scottsdale while consulting on the Arizona Biltmore Resort in the late 1920's. The natural serenity of the desert provoked him to buy 640 acres of land from which he created his world famous house and school, Taliesin West. This National Historic Landmark is located in the northeast fringe of the city, at the base of the McDowell Mountains, and is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Arizona.

The brand new baseball facility, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick is the new spring training home of both the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies. This amazing new sports complex is located just a short 7-mile drive from downtown Scottsdale. While the main stadium is shared by the two teams, each team has their own wing of the complex with 6 practice fields, clubhouses, batting cages and other amenities. Donna started sewing when she was 5 years old. She studied textiles and photography at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and draws from that experience when creating.

Donna has been particularly smitten lately with the Cotton Theory style of quilting. She loves custom work and helping build stronger community through supporting various charities with her work.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt - Final Canadian Block NW-2

Just 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver, via Sky Train, you can discover the Royal City. New Westminster is where you'll find fiber artist Terry Aske of Terry Aske Art Quilts, the creator of Block NW-2 of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt Project.

The oldest city in western Canada, New Westminster was the capital of British Columbia between 1858-1866. Founded on a lofty hill where two branches of the Fraser River meet, New Westminster was chosen as much for the strategic value of its natural defenses as for the commercial potential of the area.

In 1859, New Westminster was the mainland berth for the fleet of sternwheelers that plied the waters between Victoria and yale, the starting point of the Cariboo Wagon Road. The young city saw much action and furious traffic and trade during the Gold Rush years.

Positioned at the hub of the Greater Vancouver network today, New Westminster is now a charming mix of old and new, with a picturesque waterfront and fabulous Victorian architecture -- a vibrant and progressive city with a community rich in tradition and respect for its heritage. Terry's earliest creative memory is from making a mosaic from seeds and beans during kindergarten. Thus began her life-long quest to find the perfect medium with which to express herself. Over the years she has dabbled in such creative activities as beading, drawing, painting, knitting and sewing. Although all were enjoyable, they didn't hold her interest very long.

Then in 1998 a friend invited her to a one-day quilting course. Finally Terry found an artistic medium that fascinated and inspired her! She discovered the world of art quilts and now you can say the design and construction of fabric-based art has become Terry's passion.

A self-professed perfectionist by nature, Terry finds the precision demanded by the complex quilts she creates, combined with her passion for beautiful and vivid fabrics, makes art quilting the perfect outlet for her creativity.

Since 1998 Terry has completed more than 60 art quilts. Many of her quilts have been or are currently or about to be on exhibit in the US and Canada. I had the pleasure of meeting Terry last year when she flew to Houston to attend the International Quilt Festival. THREE of Terry's pieces were exhibited there at the world's largest quilt show.

Terry's goal is to continue to evolve as an artist and explore new subject matter and techniques in her art quilts. Terry is a founding member of the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild. Be sure and see some of Terry's beautiful work in her shop.

NORTH-5 Comes from Ohio State Capital

Catherine of MoranArtandQuilts lives in Columbus, Ohio, the 4th largest city in the American Midwest. That is where block NORTH-5 originates for the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt Project.

The city is named after the famous explorer.

In 2009 BusinessWeek magazine named Columbus the best place in America to raise a family and the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium was ranked #1 by USA Travel Guide. In 2008 Forbes magazine had named the city as the #1 up-and-coming tech city in the nation. As you can imagine, many businesses headquarter there, including the world's largest private research & development foundation, the Battelle Memorial Institute.

Columbus contains many institutions of higher-learning, led by Ohio State University, where you'll find the largest university campus in the US. Every August, Columbus hosts the rest of the state at the Ohio State Fair & Expo.

You'll also find many spectacular parks and green spaces in Columbus. One of the more interesting is at Old Deaf School Park where Columbus artist James Mason turned topiaries into art. Shown is his conception conceived from George Seurat's "A Sunday Afternoon On the Island of La Grand Jolle." Click the link to the park for more wonderful photos.

Catherine is an artist in many mediums. Art has been a passion of Catherine's ever since she won her first award in the 4th grade for a painting of "Charlotte's Web." She paints with watercolors, draws with colored pencils and quilts. After purchasing an art quilt in 2004 from a gallery, Catherine was inspired to learn to quilt. She admits to often having several projects in different mediums going at the same time. (Sound familiar to anyone?)

Most of Catherine's quilts are designed as they progress. Catherine loves creating one of a kind pieces and lets the design change as the ideas flow based on the work's progress. Catherine also admits to love playing with fabric and making beautiful things from fabric.

Catherine's work has been exhibited in many shows over the years, many through a local art league she is involved with. Catherine has made over 100 portraits of customer's homes and pets and still accepts those kinds of commissions. Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt - NORTH Row Moves to Ohio

The North Row has now moved to Ohio for the remainder of its blocks. Pam Geisel of For Quilts Sake starts out the Ohio Sisterhood contingent with her block NORTH-4 from Yellow Springs, Ohio. The village of Yellow Springs takes its name from a natural spring located in nearby Glen Helen Preserve which is rich in iron ore, leaving a yellowish-orange coloring on the rocks. The spring was thought to have curative properties and spas and hotels were built nearby.

The village was founded in 1825 by approximately 100 families, followers of Robert Owen, who wanted to emulate the utopian community at New Harmony, Indiana. The communitarian efforts dissolved due to internal conflicts. The Little Miami Railroad was completed in 1846 and brought increased commerce, inhabitants, and tourism.

Yellow Springs was one of the final stops on the Underground Railroad and the village was known for its racial tolerance. Wheeling Gaunt, a former slave who purchased his own freedom, came to Yellow Springs in the 1860s and owned a substantial amount of land upon his death in 1894. Gaunt bequeathed to the village a large piece of land, requesting that the rent be used to buy flour for the "poor and worthy widows" of Yellow Springs. Although the land was used to create Gaunt Park, and thus does not generate rent, the village expanded the bequest to include sugar and still delivers flour and sugar to the village's widows at Christmas time.

Pam's background in graphic design shows through with her passion for original fiber art, with an emphasis on art quilts and quilt-related art. Pam took her first quilting class in 2001 and has never looked back.

Her work is currently being shown as part of the Women's Voice Out Loud show in Yellow Springs during March 2011, and the Uncommon Threads V exhibit at the Dayton Metro Library. Her Fireflies artquilt will be traveling later this year as part of the Ohio Designer Craftmen's Best of 2011 exhibit.

Pam's work is also on display the galleries Urban Handman and Frame Haven. In addition to being a long time member of Quiltsy Team, Pam also belongs to the Miami Valley Art Quilt Network, the Miami Valley Quilters Guild, the Dayton Visual Arts Center, Ohio Designer Craftsmen, Fairborn Art Association and the Monday Morning Artists (of Yellow Springs).

Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt - Block NORTH 3

Block 3 of the North Row comes to us from southcentral Wisconsin. Kim of KimsCraftyApple tried out the 'wonky' technique for her pretty block.

Kim lives in a rural area just outside Madison, Wisconsin. She and her husband have an apple orchard business where folks can pick their own apples. Read more about the orchard's interesting history here.

In the county where Kim lives with her husband and two daughters, they are developing a "Barn Quilt Trail." Kim is excited that theirs is the second official barn quilt in the county.

Kim exhibits the current Sisterhood North Row with one of the two emus on the farm. She didn't say if it is the one named Mac or Tosh. Kim's mother-in-law acquired the two emus one day by trading their former owner 13 caramel apples and a sack of potatoes. The emus are mainly for the visitors to enjoy. They also have four goats, named Itsy, Zestar, Tree and Super April, along with two dogs and countless cats.

Kim is currently expecting her third daughter, due April 25th. She says she's nesting by quilting and currently has four quilt tops in the works. While researching Kim's area, I discovered that the Pleasant Company began there, original home of the American Girl dolls.

NORTH 2 of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt

The second block of the North Row comes to us from Owatonna, Minnesota and long-time Quiltsy member Lynn of lmkquilts. Owatonna is located straight down I-35 from Minneapolis and is known as the "Heart of Southern Minnesota."

Legend has it that Chief Wabena heard of the curing waters called minnewaucan. His daughter, Princess Owatonna, was very frail so he moved the tribe to the site of the natural springs on the banks of Maple Creek. Princess Owatonna drank from the springs daily and recovered her health. Her kindly spirit hovers near the bubbling waters and beckons weary travelers to pause in the beautiful valley and drink of the magic waters. You can visit the springs and the statue of Princess Owatonna at Mineral Springs Park.

Although this makes a colorful and romantic campfire story, the name most likely originated from the major river running through the county, named the Straight River. For hunders of years before the arrival of the first white settlers, Native Americans camped on the banks of the river they called "Ouitunya", which means straight.

In the middle of Owatonna's downtown is the National Farmer's Bank, widely recognized as one of the premier pieces of the "Prairie School of Architecture" in America. Designed by Louis Sullivan, the building was finished in 1908 and features gold leaf arches, stained glass windows and nouveau baroque art designs. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is not occupied by a branch of Wells Fargo Bank.

Lynn has many wonderful things in her shop. She has a long arm quilting machine that she uses to turn out her amazing work. Currently she is not able to undertake any custom work until her load is more manageable. Keep checking back to her shop to see when that status might change.

NORTH Row of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt Bursts out of the Starting Gate!

The North Row of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt starts out min Manitoba, Canada. Heather of Heather Lair Designs lives there near Gimli Harbor on Lake Winnipeg. Here's a live web cam of the harbor.

The day Heather wanted to take her picture the wind was blowing a winter gale, so she's sent us a picture of Gimli Harbor in the summer!

Gimli Harbor is the largest inland marina in Western Canada. It is located on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg, about 75 kilometers north of the provincial capital of Winnepeg. The area is also known as "Little Iceland" and is home to the largest block of people of Icelandic origin outside of Iceland.

One of the largest employers in the area is the Gimli Distillery, home of Crown Royal Whisky.

Heather's first quilted project was a backpack she made in 1975. Since there she has made hundreds of bags, bed quilts and art quilts. She has studied the history of textiles through the ages and around the globe. With this knowledge Heather incorporates techniques and materials into her award-winning work.

Current projects of Heather's are inspired by medieval illuminations, the artist Gustav Klimt, traditional Canadian quilts, Inuit art and her own Canadian landscape.

As "Quilter to the Stars," Heather has made many quilts for the movie industry. She works with a film's art director to create a quilt that matches perfectly the time and place of the movie. Heather says it is still a big thrill to sit in a movie theater and see her own quilts on the big screen!

Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt - Back to Snowy NE

Block NE-2 come to us from the heart of Massachusetts and Akiko of withhugsnstitches. Central Massachusetts is known for its history and culture.

Akiko lives in a small, historic, rural community in the midst of much natural beauty. But she is only about an hour's drive to Boston -- the best of both worlds!

Nearby Akiko's home is the 132 acre Tower Hill Botanic Gardens, operated by the local county Horticultural Society. It will celebrate its 25th anniversary next month.

And if you've been following Akiko on Facebook, you'll know that she started raising chicks last year. They all have names and their own personalities and have grown into beautiful chickens.

As you can see, Akiko has to keep some space shovelled for the chicks to exercise, even in the winter. Recently she had to rescue them after they got stuck in a snow drift!

Akiko was born and raised in Okinawa, Japan. Her grandmother was a kimono maker who passed her knowledge down to her granddaughter. After Akiko moved to the United States, she learned to quilt, and brings all her traditional skills to that craft as well.

In between raising 4 children, with all their busy schedules, Akiko creates wonderful quilts and other fun things, often involving sea creatures. Akiko admits to being obsessed with whales and fish.

She recently combined an interest in the selvage craze with her love of whales to develop a stuffed whale named Bubbly.

There have been many Bubblies (of varying size) who have been featured in countless treasuries and blogs, including the coveted selvageblog by Karen Griska. Bubbly was also featured in the April/May 2010 issue of Sew News Magazine.

Akiko's garden hat is also a permanently featured item on selvageblog as well!

Some of you might recall Akiko was the one responsible for making the 'S' in the big Quiltsy project a couple of years ago for the etsy headquarters.

When you see the entire Sisterhood quilt all put together, look for the block with the fish in the center and you'll know that's Akiko's.

Addendum: Akiko posted this on March 15th to the team -- "It's so crazy in Japan right now. My family lives far far away from where earthquake happened (like 500 miles away) but still got 3 ft tsunami. My mother lives just about 300 ft away from ocean and river. I was so worry about her. But thank God, she is safe and so is my other family. But my friend lost 7 people by tsunami. Since Saturday, every midenight she gets phone call from Japan about the bad news. Please send prayers to Japan!!!!"

Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt - SOUTH Row goes to Georgia

Block 2 of the South Row comes to us from beautiful NE Georgia. In the picturesque town of Cleveland, Georgia -- the "Gateway to the Mountains" is where you'll find Jackie of Jackiesewingstudio.

Rising from a small rural village in the 19th century, Cleveland has become the commercial, industrial and business hub of its county while still maintaining contact with earlier times.

When gold was discovered in the late 1820's on the Nacoochee River (then known as Duke's Creek), it touched off a gold rush. Gold mining operations are still found today in the area and tourists and locals alike can pan for gold.

Check out this BEAUTIFUL video of the area where Jackie lives -- where the Good Life is Even Better! Jackie's town is also famous for being the home of Babyland General Hospital, home of the Cabbage Patch Kids.

As you can imagine with such unspoiled mountain scenery, there are many outdoor pursuits available. There are activities for the seasoned outdoor adventurer to the weekend golfer. The mighty Chattahoochee River flows through the area, lending its majesty to breath-taking vistas. Several outposts rent inner tubes for leisurely floats on some parts of the river, or canoes and kayaks for guided trips down swift whitewater on other parts.

Jackie has been quilting and sewing for over 15 years. She is fortunate to be able to stay home now and sew for many hours a day. Jackie is especially drawn to batiks and uses them in many of her pieces. She also loves to use hand dyed and painted fabrics in her creations and prides herself on only using the best fabrics and suppies in her work.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt - SOUTH Row Starts!

The SOUTH Row of our Traveling Quilt starts in sunny Florida with Stacy -- otherwise known as Quilting Diva. Stacy took time out of her busy schedule to whip up this beautiful block to start her row.

While Stacy lived in Maine for 29 years, she moved to Florida about 4 years ago and just LOVES it there!

This block comes to us from the community of Brandon, near Tampa, on the central western side of Florida. Besides being the home of World Wrestling Entertainment's (WWE) training facility for future superstars called Florida Championship Wrestling, Brandon is known as the birthplace of Beef O'Brady's restaurant chain. Brandon also has its own ballet company and is home to the Florida Academy for the Performing Arts based at Music Showcase.

Even though Stacy works full time as a manager in an auto finance company, and cares for her home as a wife and mother of a 7 year old son, she manages to find time to sew nearly every day. Stacy loves to create with fabric. She thinks she has made over 400 small quilts and wall hangings in the 20 years that she has been sewing and quilting. She loves to make totes, bags and coffee cozies as well.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt Goes to the Rodeo!

Happy Birthday Texas! The 175th birthday of the Republic of Texas' founding coincides with the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. With 27,013 livestock competitions and horse show entries in 2010, the Houston Livestock Show is the largest in the world. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a charity which benefits the youth of Texas. Since the Show's beginning in 1932, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has contributed more than $265 million to scholarships, research, endowments, calf scramble participants, junior show exhibitors, the Rodeo Institute for Teacher Excellence, School Art participants, and other educational and youth programs. Currently, 1,934 students are on Show scholarships. Enrolled students are attending 88 different Texas colleges and universities. The value of these scholarships is nearly $24.8 million.

Nothing brings to mind the Old West like a modern-day trail ride. Pioneers created trails as they moved west in search of a dream and cowboys created trails to take cattle to major market centers. While these routes are no longer a necessity in daily life, more than 3,000 riders saddle up each February to relive the Old West as part of 13 trail rides leading to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

In January of 1952, several men formed the very first trail ride as a way to increase awareness of the Show. Though only four men made the first journey from Brenham, Texas, the attention they raised attracted more publicity than ever expected, as more than 80 men signed up the next year. The trail rides are a signature tradition of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo today.

Today’s riders hit the trail in an attempt to recreate the Old West, and in doing so, find a common ground that links us all to the Show. A sense of history and pride resides in each rider; igniting envy and intrigue in each child as they watch the trail riders and hope to one day join them. It's so fun to drive down a highway this time of year and come across a Trail Ride making its way to Houston for the big meetup before the big Rodeo Parade through downtown Houston. The Trail Rides and Parade signal the start of Houston's 3 week Rodeo season.

What better place for a Houston block of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt? I bundled up my nearly 2-yr old grandson (for his first ever Rodeo Parade) and we had a great day watching the bands and trail riders ride through downtown Houston.

Then we visited the nearby campus of the University of Houston. Here Tris is pointing to my quilt block at the Statue of the Four Lies.

In front of the administration building is the U of H mascot, the Cougar.

Block Tejas-3 is pictured above with my honeysuckle hedge, which is in full bloom now, as you can see. The azaleas are also starting to pop. I just wanted to show all my fellow quilting Sisters who live farther north in colder climes that Spring really is on its way!

Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt - NE Row Begins!

Nancy from AnotherGhostQuilts has started off the NE Row in beautiful style.

Nancy is shown here with Skippy the corgi who just celebrated his 3rd birthday. (They had brownie pie and Skippy got to taste the frosting.) Lily the long-haired dachshund is the Queen of the roost. Nancy said she would have liked to include her hubby Jim in the photo, but someone had to take the picture!

Nancy and Jim (and crew) live in the Belgrade Lakes region of Maine, just a few miles northwest of the state's capital city, Augusta. While the current population is estimated to be about 4,000 year-round citizens, that number nearly doubles when non-residents arrive to spend the summer months at their cottages.

Belgrade covers about 60 square miles, with a large part of this area composed of lakes, streams and wetlands. Its five lakes and their inlet/outlet streams offer several species of fish for those who enjoy fishing, plenty of water surface for boaters, and excellent opportunities for those people interested in bird watching.

The area was an annual summertime destination for the writers E.B. White and Ernest Thompson. The latter's sojourns at Great Pond (one of the Belgrade lakes) inspired his 1979 play On Golden Pond, which was made into the Academy Award–winning 1981 movie, On Golden Pond.

If you've wondered about the meaning of Nancy's shop name, her motto is "Hauntingly Beautiful Handmade Quilts". Nancy said, "The world moves a little too fast for me. Crafting quilts by hand is my panacea." She loves the smallness and tedium of patchwork and hand quilting, the patience it both teaches and requires, the opportunity to feed her compulsion to work with color and hoard her favorite fabrics, the chance to combine beauty and functionality into something as elemental as a quilt in all its warmth and comfort.

Since Austin is only about 90 minutes' drive up the highway from San Antonio, it doesn't surprise me that block #2 of the Tejas row has checked in.

Barbara of MurphysHouse has added her block to the row.

Residents of Austin are known as "Austinites," and include a diverse mix of university professors, students, politicians, lobbyists, musicians, state employees, high-tech workers, blue-collar workers, and white-collar workers. The main campus of the University of Texas is located in Austin. The city is home to enough large sites of major technology corporations to have earned it the nickname "Silicon Hills." Austin's official slogan promotes the city as "The Live Music Capital of the World", a reference to its status as home to many musicians and music venues. In recent years, many Austinites have also adopted the unofficial slogan "Keep Austin Weird"; this refers partly to the eclectic and progressive lifestyle of many Austin residents, but is also the slogan for a campaign to preserve smaller local businesses and resist excessive commercialization.

Something you might not know about Austin: The world’s largest urban bat colony resides on Austin’s Congress Avenue Bridge in the summer. By largest, we’re talkin’ 1.5 million bats. The Mexican Free-tailed bats migrate from Mexico every spring and bat watching is a popular Austin warm weather pass-time. People gather to watch the entire colony fly out at sunset.

Barbara has been sewing over 50 years. In 1976 she and her sister took a fateful class in quilting, and Barbara's been perfecting her craft ever since. While she gains much satisfaction from hand quilting, most of her quilts now are machine quilted.

I know you've been wondering about the namesake of Barbara's shop. Murphy is Barbara's 5 year old Cairn Terrier. The pair of them can often be found participating in Barbara's other passion out on the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin. In fact, Barbara assured me that is where we would have seen the Sisterhood row had she taken it with her. Texas has over 800 golf courses, and Austin is consistently ranked as top golfing destination, so Barbara pretty much lives in a wonderful place to practice her passions!

One row in our Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt will come from a single state. With over 25 million residents, it stands to reason that our Quiltsy Team population also reflects many members from the Lone Star State.

The name Texas comes from the Spanish translation (Tejas) of a native Caddo Indian word that means "friends" -- therefore Texas is "the Friendly State."

It was not coincidence that Ann of QuiltingFrenzy begins our row with her beautiful block. She hails from San Antonio, a place that figures prominently in the early history of Texas. It is also where I was born and since Ann and my mother share the same name (first AND last names), it just all adds up to Ann starting out our Texas travelog.

Ann wanted very much to photograph her block in front of that most hallowed symbol of our state, the Alamo. Unfortunately she pulled her back out and was unable to get over for the photo shoot. We'll just have to pretend! :)

This Spring marks the

175th ann iv er sary of Texas independence and many of San Antonio's special events will center around the famous Battle of the Alamo. Click here to learn more about them.

Ann has been sewing for over 30 years and quilting for nearly 20. She likes to let the fabric speak to her to guide toward the finished products. Recently Ann has been making a lot of custom quilts, including photo memory and memory quilts made from clothing.

Ann has pieced quilt tops for quilting icon Eleanor Burns of "Quilt in a Day" fame -- one of which was used in her Victory Quilts trunk show. Ann also tested a new quilt pattern by piecing a quilt top that was quilted by Judy Jackson and featured on page 52 of her "Lover's Knot" book.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt - SW Row so far...

The gals in the SW Row have been busy working on their blocks!

The first block, made by Dede of PeppersAttic has already been received and added to by Gail of QuiltSewPieceful. Cindy of cindyrquilts has completed her block and mailed it to catch up with the row in Colorado.

Cindy lives in Beit Shemesh, Israel across from Kibbutz Tzora there. She is pictured standing in front of the ancient wall at Tel Tzora with her quilt block. The wall is just a few minutes from her house and is famous for Samson and Delilah. Samson is believed to have been buried in Tel Tzora overlooking the Sorek Valley. There reside two large gravestones of Samson and his father Manoah. Nearby stands Manoah's altar (referenced in Judges 13:19-24). It is located between the cities of Zorah and Eshtaol.

Cindy is known for color coordinating her wardrobe and accessories though she didn't realize (until I'd pointed it out) that she'd coordinated her hat with her block. :) Purple is her favorite color and it tickled her to know she'd subconsciously coordinated. Cindy has been quilting for 16 years and concentrates primarily on landscapes of Israel. She also makes lovely cosmetic bags, purses, housewares like trivets and hotplate covers and beautiful wearable art like vests and hats. Add cindyrquilts to your favorites!

Dede named her shop PeppersAttic in honor of a much-loved cat who kept her company in her attic studio back in Alaska. Sadly, Pepper the cat has crossed the Rainbow Bridge, but his memory lives on in some of the quilts in Dede's home. Dede now lives in warmer Southern California where she continues a life-long love affair with fabric, quilts, vintage linens, textiles, yarn and fiber. She has been making wonderful creations for over 40 years and loves putting heirloom quality into all she makes. Dede does a lot of custom work and her Rag Bags are getting famous -- right now they are featured in 45 treasuries!

Gail of QuiltSewPieceful has been quilting for almost 20 years. (The second block above is Gail's) Gail specializes in beautiful pieced quilts that she finishes on her Gammil Classic long arm quilting machine. She also does machine embroidery on her Bernina 830, has a line of her quilt patterns (check them out!) and teaches quilting at a local quilt shop. In her spare time, Gail is Wonder Woman! j/k

Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt Project - Block No. 1!

The National Quilting Association (NQA) began sponsoring National Quilting Day with a resolution passed by members attending the 22nd annual Show in Lincoln, Nebraska in June 1991. The third Saturday in March is officially designated as National Quilting Day, but quilters are flexible and we love a celebration -- especially when fabric is involved. So over the years observance of National Quilting Day has unofficially been expanded to the whole month of March.

Every year the NQA designates a specific National Quilting Day theme. For 2011 the theme is "Build Your Own Log Cabin." The log cabin block is among the oldest in quilting. It symbolizes the warmth and belonging of hearth and home. The NQA encourages quilters this year to make log cabin quilt blocks to make charity quilts for those who may be struggling for warmth and comfort.

Hoping to repeat some of their successful participation of National Quilting Day last year, Team Quiltsy has many fun projects and promotions coming for this year's observation.

The first is a group effort titled "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Quilt" project. Many members are making their particular take on a log cabin block. The participants have been assigned rows and are mailing their blocks to each other to build a beautiful community quilt.

Today we have our very first block - coming from KathyKinsella in British Columbia, Canada!
Kathy lives on the imposing Shuswap Lake (which looks a teensy bit cold right now). She is a fibre artist who designs her own fun art bags and greeting cards. Much of her work is influenced by her beautiful surroundings and you'll often find whimsy in her work. Kathy also designs and makes wonderful liturgical fibre artworks.

In the coming weeks we'll have fun seeing the Quiltsy members and their blocks as we build toward the finished Sisterhood quilt!

Wondering What's Up with Cotton Prices?

The following article is shared with permission from American Quilt Retailer, Vol. 17, Issue 97, January 2011 by Jim Salinas, sales associate for Moda Fabrics; edited by Susan Fuquay, publisher American Quilt Retailer

If you are wondering what is behind the recent increase in the retail prices of your quilting cottons [and all cotton goods for that matter], here is a brief explaination to help you understand the situation.

Cotton is a commodity and like all commodities prices are increasing. Most would attribute this primarily to the weakening dollar. As confidence in the dollar erodes, commodities rise in value. The dollar has weakened, of course, as our national debt has skyrocketed. Premium fabric brands are printed in Japan and Korea. The dollar has weakened by approximately 20 percent to these countries' currencies.

We are also wrestling with a worldwide cotton shortage. This shortage is exacerbated by flooding in Pakistan, heavy rains in China and hail damage in west Texas. India has stopped the exportation of cotton altogether, and China has severely restricted its cotton exportation because rising wealth is boosting consumption in their own country. Labor shortages in China have also contributed to the reduction in available cotton. Indeed, the entire globe is competing for a finite amount of product. As is sometimes the case, when commodities spike in price, speculators hold out for better prices, and it appears that is what some greige goods producers may be doing.

Cotton factory in China. Local farmers bring their raw cotton to a large cotton processing factory outside Yuli, Xinjiang, China. The cotton is gathered into the large piles seen here. Eventually the raw cotton will be processed to remove its seeds, and it will then be compacted into bales for shipment to washing and spinning factories.

Historically, when cotton prices would rise dramatically, mills could blend their way to a cheaper product. The quilting culture simply does not support a blended product, not to mention the fact that polyester (a petroleum derivative) prices are also rising.

Truly we are dealing with a "perfect storm" of problems when it comes to fabric costs.

The quilting industry is also dealing with a significant decrease in the number of print mills that can print the smaller minimums [the quilting] industry requires, as well as the 16 to 18 screens so frequently used.

There were once approximately 25 printers that could do this type of work; we are down to 10 now! This puts upward pressure on printing costs. We still have six mills left in America, but they produce carpet, upholstery, etc. They may do some high speed rotary printing, but with large minimums and only four to six screens. They do not do low minimum flat bed press printing using 18 screens.

As if this weren't enough, the industry is also dealing with two other issues. As the cost of greige goods (fabric before it is printed) increased, the duty on these goods also increases. Last but not least, UPS shipping costs [increased] 4.9 percent in January 2011 alone! Wow! The perfect storm indeed!

Stephanie Dell'olio, president, retail division of Marcus Bros., recently exclaimed, "We have experienced shortages in the past, but this particular set of conditions is like no other we have ever experienced in our 100-year history."

One reason these price hikes are creating so much consternation is that we have experienced so little inflation in the fabric industry over the last 20 years. My wife Roxanne took quilting classes when we lived in Phoenix 20 years ago. She paid $6.99 per yard for Hoffman of California prints. The industry was much smaller then, and Hoffman was considered (as it still is today) a premier brand. Today Hoffman prints are $9.99 per yard in many quilt shops. This is only a 44 percent increase in 20 years!

In 1990 a loaf of bread was $0.70. In 2010 a comparable loaf was $2.69. That's a 287% increase. The average cost of a new car in 1990 was $16,900. In 2010 the average price of a new car was $27,000. This is a 65% increase. One pound of ground beef was $0.89 in 1990. In 2010 a pound of ground beef was $3.29. This is a 270% increase.

You can look at just about anything you purchase and if you compare the price of that item in 1990 to the price today you may just find quilting cotton is still a good value worth the joy it brings you!

Heirloom Hand Quilting by CottontailQuilts

Though machine quilting is very popular these days there are those of us who still do hand quilting and it is my pleasure to feature one today. Each time I looked in the QuiltPetaler shop I keep being drawn back to this quilt. I think it was because of the warm tones of the brown and blue combinations which is one of my favorites.
She used fabric from Moda called Pure on the both the front and as a backing. This quilt is machine pieced and quilted and is an original design by the quilter. This would make a great throw to keep you warm on those cold winter nights. Since we are approaching the holiday season remembers also as a great gift. UniquelyNancy is an extremely talented quilter and fabric artisan and creates many, many gorgeous goodies for her Etsy shop, but I love this particular piece as an example of her great talents. I know it's not spring, but I love this purse and would proudly wear it all year long! I adore her use of colors and fabrics here, and the addition of the appliqued flowers is just brilliant. The handmade piping adds a professional touch and the unique use of shape in the purse flap puts Nancy leaps and bounds above other purse makers. The crowning touch is the gorgeous little button that adds the perfect bit of character to finish off the purse. Nancy doesn't know it yet, but she's a role model of mine; someone I look up to and hope to achieve her level of mastery in sewing skills one day. Bonbonsandmore has so many great items in her Etsy shop, but I chose to feature this Crocheted Rag Rug for several reasons. First, I just love crocheted pieces. Second, I think it's fabulous that this rag rug is made from upcycled bedsheets. Upcycling is a great way to help save items that may not be usable for their intended purposes any more, or to give an older item a sort of makeover in to something beautiful and useful again. Using black and white fabric and adding and accent color is one of my favorite ways to make a quilt, so when I saw this quilt in her shop I couldn't resist but choose this as the item of the day.
Quilt measures 50 1/2 by 58 1/2 which makes a perfect quilt for a nap. Not only is the top of the quilt gorgeous but she used coordinating black and green on the back and then machine quilted the beautiful motif with black thread. I don't think you can ever have enough pillows, especially pretty ones like this! These colors are perfect for fall or anytime of year. This pattern is known as Chinese Coins and it is as pretty on a pillow as it is on a larger quilt. QuiltFinger used Moda's 9 fabric line, and each column has 9 coins - pretty neat! It fits a 22 or 24 inch form, making it a great floor pillow and just as great on the couch to lie against.

QuiltFinger made a neat back closure with hidden buttons, easy to use and very secure. Check out the other great items in her shop, or snatch this one up - I'm sure you will be delighted!

It’s Not Your Grandmothers Quilts Anymore

Go back in time when you were little. Did you visit your grandmother who had all those wonderful quilts on her bed? When you took a nap you crawled under those quilts and everything seemed right with the world.

I have the privilege of owning two quilts that my great aunt made. These quilts are made from recycled wool garments. The wool one is extremely heavy, I can see how that kept you warm in the Ohio winter nights. My father told me these are the quilts that he used when he was little. When I look at these quilts I takes me back to a much simpler time, where the women hand cut and sewn their projects. These women did not have the modern sewing machines, the long arm quilting machines, nor did they have rotary cutters, mats and rulers. Even without all the modern day quilting gadgets (that we just can’t live without), their quilts were very beautiful and functional. The two quilts I own have been tied to keep the standard three layers together. The binding is a whipstitch around the whole quilt. Nothing extremely fancy but functional. I’m sure my father appreciated his quilts growing up.

As the quilting movement has progressed, quilts have graduated from the bed to the walls, tables, and pillows to name a few. I have several pieces hanging on my walls. These wall hangings add warmth and depth to any room. Mine are smaller versions of classic quilting patterns, or appliqué. There are also beautiful art quilts, which are landscapes, ocean scenes, mountain scenes and even portraits.. These quilts will match or surpass any painting in my book.

If you’re looking to decorate with quilts, it is easy to do. I have made bed quilts and than made a few extra blocks and made a wall hanging to match. You could even make extra twelve to sixteen inch blocks and make pillow covers. One of my favorite wall hangings was a log cabin Christmas tree I had made. My sister and brother-in-law sometimes puts up a tree and sometimes not. As the kids are older now the sometimes not is usually the norm. So I made this wall hanging and gave it to my sister. I told her on the years they don/’t put a tree up she is to hang the wall hanging, that way there will always be a Christmas tree in her house.

The Rest of the Story - Pillowcases for Haiti Project

UPDATE about our March team project to send pillowcases back with Quiltsy member Ellen's (of bearcreekcre ations) daughter Joanna to Haiti. Joanna is a midwife with Heartline Ministries in Port au Prince, a group that provides services through their women's clinic and birthing center. They also hold classes to teach Haitian women to sew and give them the skills and information needed to start their own businesses selling the items they make.

Once Heartline approved the pillowcase project, Quiltsy members had just 3 weeks before Joanna's return flight to Haiti. The Quiltsy Team sprung into action and invited others in the etsy community to join in. When all was said and done, Joanna packed 86 colorful brand new handmade pillowcases into her luggage! Look at them all!

I'm so glad we were able to complete this project in time for Joanna to hand deliver it, as now it is uncertain whether such donations would make it. Heartline founder John recently blogged, "Humanitarian aid is being held at the ports while exorbitant customs fees must be paid before the containers can be released and the supplies made available to assist people who otherwise would not be able to secure help." American Airlines currently has an embargo on passengers carrying any boxes or bins. No plastic boxes, bins or totes may be brought into Haiti amid very strict luggage restrictions being enforced.

John's wife Beth wrote a note to Quiltsy, "I love, love, love the pillowcases! They are so bright and beautiful -- we will have the loveliest birth center going. Thank you so much!!! It is so good to have Joanna back in Haiti. She brings such a sweetness, love for Haiti and love for the program with her. Thank you all for being so supportive to Joanna and all of us!"

Once Joanna settled back into her Haitian routine, she sent us some photos of the pillowcases being used. Each pillowcase helped to cheer up a new mother during her labor, delivery and post-partum efforts. The photo above shows Joanna supporting a Haitian woman during her labor.

"It's so nice to actually SEE my donation being used," said Pam of BaconRidgeQuilting after recognizing one of her pillowcases among Joanna's photos. "So often when you make something for charity, you never know what became of it. This project was so special because we absolutely know the end of the story!"

Everyone who participated in this Pillowcase for Haiti project should have also entered their number of donated cases in the AllPeopleQuilt Million Pillowcase Challenge.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON QUILT-BUYING

1) WHAT IS A QUILT?

A quilt is not just a blanket. Technically, a quilt consists of three layers: a patchwork or whole-cloth top, batting on the inside (varies in loft and material from traditional low-loft cotton to puffy comforter-type thick loft in cotton, poly, a blend of the two, or wool.) The quilting in a quilt refers to the stitches that hold the three layers together. These can be done by hand or machine. The quilting stitches in a quilt are typically what give it its texture. There are some exceptions to this - for instance a log cabin quilt consists of many narrow strips and is often tie-quilted. The texture in this case comes from the many pieces or "logs". A cathedral window quilt is another example in which the texture comes from the technique of folding fabric into a complex design and doesn't involve quilting the layers, but the folding and pressing is extremely labor-intensive and done by hand. In a patchwork or whole cloth quilt, hand quilting gives quilts wonderful texture and bumpiness because the stitches can be pulled tightly by the quilter. Washing a quilt and gently drying it will also cause the inner batting to shrink a bit and this also gives that wonderful texture, but be careful about washing and especially drying an heirloom quilt. A good quilter will include care instructions with your quilt.

2) WHY BUY A QUILT?

A nicely made quilt is both functional and beautiful. Most quilters will tell you that they derive great satisfaction from the opportunity to combine beauty and practicality into their craft. The layering provides great warmth and comfort as well as durability, which is why a well-made quilt may be handed down from generation to generation. Quilts make special gifts, add a cozy feel to any space, and come in styles to fit any decor, from traditional to contemporary. Quilts also look great on the wall, and "art" quilts are made expressly for this purpose. It's important to hang a quilt properly so that the weight is evenly distributed to prevent stretching. Most quilters will add a hanging sleeve upon request. The buyer can then slip a dowel cut to size and easily hang a quilt on the wall. Art quilts and wall hangings are a wonderful decorative alternative to paintings and prints and add dimension and charm to any room.

3) QUILT SIZES SEEM TO VARY GREATLY. HOW DO I KNOW WHAT SIZE TO BUY?

Standard mattress sizes (in inches) are as follows:

Crib 28 x 52
Twin 39 x 75 long (dormitory) twin 39 x 80
Full (double) 54 x 75
Queen 60 x 80
King 76 x 80
California King 72 x 84

The size quilt you choose depends on how much overhang you prefer on the sides and bottom, and whether or not you want a pillow-tuck at the top. Many buyers say that if they see a quilt they absolutely love, they buy it and find a place for it, either folded at the bottom of a sofa, over the back of a chair, or layered on a bed over a plain bedspread. Most quilters will work with you on customizing a quilt to the size you need.

4) WHY DO QUILT PRICES VARY SO MUCH?

The advent of e-commerce has made quilts more affordable by eliminating the shop-keeper middle person. Prices vary widely depending on the size of the quilt, and the quality and cost of the fabric. This is important because a quilt is only as nice as the fabric with which it is made. Top quality designer cotton fabric costs 9.00 or 10.00 dollars a yard. Many quilters have serious fabric addictions and keep their eye out for sales and pass the savings on to the buyer. The third factor in price variance is the type and amount of quilting. A quilt that is simply pieced in large squares and tied will cost much less than an intricately pieced patchwork with lots of dense, fine hand quilting. With the invention of the long-arm quilting machine, many of today's quilters do the quilting stitches by machine. Although not as labor-intensive as hand quilting, machine quilting still requires great skill and patience. The quilter still has the tedious chore of burying all the threads.

Whether hand tied, hand quilted, or machine quilted, crafting a quilt is a labor-intensive process. It requires designing, cutting, piecing, marking, layering, basting, quilting, binding, and labeling.

The art and craft of quilting has undergone a true renaissance in the last decade, resulting in surprisingly diverse styles and designs. Many people don't realize that quilts are not the stereotypical grandmotherly blankets of yesteryear. The key to buying a quilt that you love is to find a quilter whose taste, artistic eye, and design style correspond to yours. Now more than ever, there is a quilt out there for every buyer!

Challenge Winner - Club Aloha

Thanks to all who participated in our first National Quilting Day Challenge! The winner of our challenge is ClubAloha with her beautiful Quilted Table Runner.

This is how she describes her quilt:

This piece I created for the Quiltsy Team Challenge - The Nature of Quilting for National Quilt Day which occurred on March 20th. The theme "The Nature of Quilting - Quiltsy Style" open to each individual's interpretation. Since I love spring and the beautiful flowers that nature gives us, I decided to make this spring floral table runner as my piece for the challenge.

The Dresden Plate quilt pattern was one of the most popular during the 1920s and 30s. I used a Dresden Plate template and contemporary fabrics to create this runner. How bright and beautiful this will look on any table. Perfect for spring and Easter brunch!

The plate pieces were machine appliqued to 4 blocks with a decorative stitch, then other blocks added on point.
The table runner measures 15.5" wide and 60" long (point to point). Fabrics are 100% cotton. The batting is Warm & White 100% cotton; it keeps its shape wash after wash. I machine quilted with King Tut cotton candy color thread. The binding has been machine stitched down. The backing is Michael Miller's Savannah - black with floral print - I fussy-cut some of the flowers to make the blocks used on the front of the runner also.

This is a beautiful piece of quilted art that really celebrates spring!

As much as I adore patchwork, certain fabrics are simply too beautiful to scissor, and call for a whole cloth project.

This Kaffe Fassett Turkish Delight fabric reminded me of my travels to Russia and Turkey and my adventures buying carpets in the outdoor markets from the central Asian rug merchants of Uzbekistan, Daghestan, and the other stans! A side trip to Istanbul weighed me down with beautiful kilims and suzanis. These memories led to my design of this art quilt/wall hanging called Flying Carpet. I added a border from Windham's folklore line, and Kaffe's mirage stripe for the fringe. In case you forget you are flying, I backed it with Kaffe's red Clouds, another current obsession. I then densely hand quilted into the pattern. I've held off on adding a hanging sleeve, but will do so at no extra cost. Such fun, I am now making a few in larger sizes, and different palettes.

On the wall or on a table, may my little Flying Carpet transport you.

2010 - Quiltsy Team Rules

Here are the proposed team rules that will become effective April 2010. If you spot a typo, or have any questions, please let us know! If you are a member in good standing on the team you will receive an e-mail with the rules and will be asked to reply to that e-mail to remain a member in good standing with all team benefits. A copy of this will be sent to all prospective team members. Those applicants must have their shops approved by a team member who will be assigned to review the shop and determine if the shop meets the qualifications that we have set forth here. Thank you for your input on the new rules, we hope this will help keep our membership numbers manageable and active!

Quiltsy Team Membership Rules

In order to be an approved team member you must:

1. Must be an active seller for three months before joining (no sales required). Must have 3 quilted items listed in shop. After application and approval status will be probationary for 3 months so new members show they will be active participants and will be able to continue their shops.

2. Must have a complete profile, policies and location including city, state, and country.

3. Must participate in team thread at least once a month. We are using a yahoo database spreadsheet in order for each member to check in quarterly to mark their participation. If you do not want to join the yahoo group you should ask someone to add you to the database and check in for you.

4. Must maintain at least 3 (or more) quilted items ready for sale in shop at all times. These must be made by the shop owner or a close relative. Vintage quilts or quilts being resold for craft purposes do not qualify. (Exceptions made for extraordinary circumstances, vacations, illness, etc) Definition of quilted: made of two layers of fabric stitched together with a padding held in place with decorative stitching by hand or machine. Includes bed coverings, wall hangings, purses, bags, table coverings, pillow coverings, postcards and cases of all types. Quilts without batting, such as cathedral window, yo-yo quilts, crazy quilts and summer quilts are also acceptable as long as they are quilted - not just two layers of fabric edgestitched together.
*the membership committee reserves the right to make a final determination on the issue if there is a question on suitability or quality of items.

5. Must comply with all Etsy TOUs

6. Must provide a working e-mail and agree to receive group e-mail from quiltsy team.

7. Must participate in at least one team activity during a calendar year. This may be a promotion, swap, challenge, blog article, etc.

8. Must use appropriate tagging. Only Quilted items are to be tagged Quiltsy Team. All other items may be tagged QTM (quiltsy team member). Only items in approved Quiltsy shops may be tagged Quiltsy Team.

Any approved team member who is not following team rules will be warned and moved to the probation list. If they do not comply during the three months of probation they will be removed from the membership list permanently. Only members in good standing are allowed to participate in team swaps.

Quiltsy's Pillowcase Challenge/Haiti Connecton!

The Haitian earthquake hit close to home in Quiltsyland. Just a couple days before the earthquake, Quiltsy member Ellen of bearcreekcreations had seen her daughter Joanna off at the airport. Joanna returned from Christmas break to her job in Port au Prince, Haiti where she works as a mid-wife in a charitable women’s clinic. After receiving word of Joanna’s safety, Ellen swung into action to help. She quickly set up a Facebook group to support the Haitian group’s efforts and facilitate crucial information exchange.

Quiltsy members who joined Ellen’s Facebook group were able to follow the day-to-day trials and successes as the woman’s clinic became more of a MASH unit. Flights of doctors and supplies arrived to treat scores of wounded Haitians, while families of patients and workers camped around outside. The accounts, photos and uploaded video gave a better idea of the real story than any television news report.

About the same time, Quiltsy members discussed participating in the National Million Pillowcase Challenge. The year-long challenge to quilters and sewers is to make and donate one million pillowcases to local charities.Since the Quiltsy Team is an international and online group, there was a problem participating as a group in the challenge. Where would the pillowcases be sent? What is a local charity when your members are flung all over the globe?

*lightbulb moment* Joanna’s group in Haiti needs pillowcases for all the patients and people living with them! Many emails later, arrangements have been made to get the pillowcases to the group in Haiti and Quiltsy members are busy busting their fabric stashes to make pillowcases.

Quiltsy would like to open up this project to anyone else desiring to send a pillowcase along with theirs. Ask your friends, family, customers or guild members to join in!
