What did you donate and any special details about it?
I cannot imagine being in the hospital as a child. It has to be so scary. I decided to donate a quilt to Quilts for Kids with the hope that the quilt I made would bring some comfort to a child. When I was sewing this quilt, I imagined hugging a child and giving them some emotional strength and love.
Because this quilt is for a child, I decided to use bold colors. Perhaps the bright colors would lighten up their troubles and bring some cheer to their otherwise dull hospital room. I started with a collection of fat quarters “Mola Stories by Kathy Hall” and built the quilt around that collection.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I live in Altamonte Springs, a northern suburb of Orlando, Florida. I grew up in Baltimore, but the warm weather brought me south 35 years ago. My first purchase when I got my first job was a sewing machine. I’ve been sewing since high school and I can assure you that is a very long time. I started out sewing my own clothes. For many years, I didn’t sew at all. Life got in the way, but in 1996, I discovered quilting. I always have several projects going on at the same time. Seldom do I watch television without a needle and thread in my hand.
My favorite thing to make are t-shirt quilts. I know they are a lot of work and I know it is not a profitable endeavor. T-shirt quilts do take a lot of time, but I love the outcome. It is so rewarding to take someone's favorite things and turn it into a quilt that will be special for years to come. It is like writing a book in fabric. I am always honored when someone allows me to take their treasured possessions and make sew their book.
How long have you been a member of the Quiltsy Team?
I am a new member of the Quiltsy Team. I joined in September 2015, and I am so glad I did! The members of this team have taught me so much and they are a bunch of wonderful people. I am proud to say I am a member of the Quiltsy Team.
