Quiltsy Cares - Gina Massop of Gina Marie Crafts

Quiltsy Team member, Gina Massop, has donated these delightful crib quilt and puppy rag quilts to CADA (Committee Against Domestic Abuse) House in Mankato MN.

This charity is special to Gina because of the many families affected by domestic violence. Many of the victims of domestic violence are blamed and shamed in to believing they are somehow responsible for their abusers behavior. CADA offers safety, advocacy, and empowerment to those affected by domestic violence and provides education to victims and our communities to work towards changing attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate violence.

Gina hopes that these quilts will give the children affected by the instability and insecurity of a violent home, a warm, snuggly, secure feeling ... and a quilt to call their own.

Gina lives in Minnesota Lake, MN on a country acreage with her husband Tom. They have four grown children living in several states. Gina has been quilting for twenty years and has been a member of the Quiltsy Team for four of the five years she has had a shop on Etsy. Her Etsy shop is called Gina Marie Crafts. She make bibs, burp cloths, table runners, ornaments, and lip balm holders; but her favorite things to make are quilts.

Quiltsy Cares' Judy Messenger 3-24-2015

Today's spotlight is on Judy Messenger of FabriArts and the quilt she made will be donated to Quilts of Valor, Canada www.quiltsofvalour.ca/.

She calls the quilt "Canadian Wave"....the red pointed strips are reminiscent of the points of the maple leaf on the Canadian flag, and as she was designing the layout, she thought of a "wave" at a sporting event. This is her way of sending that wave to a wounded service member!

When asked why Quilts of Valor, Judy replied "Quilts are one small way of showing our injured Canadian Armed Forces service members and our veterans their sacrifices are recognized by Canadians. The Quilts of Valor group at a local quilt shop was the first group of fellow quilters that I joined back in 2009 when I started getting serious about quilting. It was great to get together with other talented quilt artists and learn from them, as well as providing a service to our Canadian Forces members! The quilt shop where we met has since closed, but I've recently found another QoV group to get together with!

Quilts of Valor has participated at "Quilts at the Creek" quiltsatthecreek.wordpress.com/ , and the outdoor quilt show at Black Creek Pioneer Village in Toronto since the show's inception in 2012, with a lovely display of quilts hanging in the grove. Canadian Wave will probably hang at Quilts at the Creek this summer before it's given to the local QoV rep.

Judy lives in Toronto, Ontario Canada for most of the year, but is lucky enough to spend much of the summer and autumn months at their cottage on Lake Muskoka, in Ontario's cottage country. Of course she moves her quilting studio with her!

She made my first rag quilt in 2001, and made many rag quilts for family members, and for Project Linus.  She started her first bed quilt in 2002, but didn't finish it until 2007, after she got more confident with her free-motion quilting, although she did continue to make rag quilts and other "quilt-as-you-go" quilts during those years. Judy is an active member of 3 local quilt guilds and helps with the organization of the guild quilt show and Quilts at the Creek.

Known as Judith to fellow Quiltsy members, she opened FabriArts late in 2012 after participating in a local craft show for the first time.  She has been a member of the Quiltsy Team since about November 2013.  She feels it is a great group of fellow quilting enthusiasts, who all support each other!

Her favorite things to make for her ETSY shop are baby quilts and her fabric postcards. She thinks it is fun to work with bright fabrics for the baby quilts, fabrics that don't go with the decor in either her house or cottage! The fabric postcards are little art projects where she can try new techniques or stitch with some of her extensive fiber collection.

Quiltsy Cares Charity Quilts Stephanie Hateley 3-17-15

Today's Quiltsy Cares spotlight is on Stephanie Hateley. Stephanie is donating her quilt to the  Newcastle Mater Mental Health Hospital – their craft stall to raise funds for the mental health section, especially the children’s ward. She explained that when hospitals in Australia hold fundraisers the money all goes to the medical, surgical and children’s hospitals, but none is funnelled through to the mental health side, they are the ‘poor’ cousins, so all the money raised from the charity/craft stall is given to the mental health section and is used to buy items for therapy, play,  books, etc. for the inpatients to use while in hospital. I used to be a psychiatric nurse for many years so I can understand their needs. Robyn, from Black Tulip Quilts, is the co-ordinator for this and comes to the craft group to collect all the items as they are ready.

Stephanie donated a blue and white tall ships embroidered table runner. She also started a craft group at her church that donate small and large quilted items and lots of other things, like knitted and crocheted items, on a regular basis. She also donates some items from her shop when they are sitting there for a while and they always sell fast on their stall.
Stephanie lives in Anna Bay, paradise! A part of Australia called Port Stephens in New South Wales about a 2 ½ hour drive north of Sydney on the coast. She has been quilting just over 3 years and has been a member of Quiltsy for 6 months.

Quiltsy Scrap Block Swap

Time to start planning for our next block swap. For this one we will be doing a scrap block swap! To get us started I have added a poll to the side of the blog for block size. Please vote and let us know what size block you would be interested in. At this point I am thinking quilters choice for colors and pattern, so we will be able to make some super scrappy quilts! This will be a centralized swap, and I (Pamelaquilts) will act as hostess for this one. We'll decide how many blocks as we figure out how many people are interested in participating. (I think we'll set the deadline then also, so we allow enough time for the amount of blocks we will be making) This swap is for Quiltsy members only.

I will start off the list with myself and add names as you confirm that you for sure want to join in!
