Quiltsy Cares: Monica Mitchell of Lunetta Quilts

Today’s featured Quiltsy member is Monica Mitchell of Lunetta Quilts. Monica is from Brooklin, ON, in Canada, and the charity that she is donating to is Project Linus Canada.

What did you donate and any special details about it?
This baby quilt, made in a lattice pattern using a variety of colourful bright prints, was donated to Project Linus Canada. The mission of Project Linus is to “provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need of a hug, through the gifts of new, handmade, washable blankets, quilts, and afghans.” The charity originally focused on supporting children undergoing cancer treatment but has expanded to assist others in need. Project Linus was named after the adorable security blanket-toting character from the Peanuts comic strip. Creator Charles Schulz was aware of Project Linus and was delighted to have Linus inspire blanket makers to help comfort children.

Why is your charity special to you?
As the core of LunettaQuilts is baby quilts, donating to Project Linus was a natural fit. When I complete a baby quilt, I enjoy knowing that it will find a forever home, giving warmth and comfort to a little girl or boy. As a mother and grandmother, I know how important a blanket or quilt can be to a child; I’ve witnessed the immediate stress reduction when snuggling up with a favourite blankie many times. Ann Carr, the Project Linus Ajax/Pickering Chapter Co-ordinator mentioned that her chapter alone donated 225 blankets and quilts last year and has been able to support seniors in addition to children in the area. Recently, the chapter donated 60 blankets to local seniors affected by a fire in their senior’s residence. It’s wonderful to know that my quilt will find its way into the arms of an infant, child or adolescent in need of comfort. As a resident of Durham Region, it’s also nice knowing that my donation will be used to meet a local need.

What is your favorite thing to make in your Etsy Shop?
I started making baby quilts a number of years ago, even before my grandchildren started arriving. My love affair with baby quilts led to a large inventory, despite the fact that my 3 grandchildren – along with many other family and friends - have each received quilts. This growing inventory led me to open my Etsy shop last September and offer my quilts for sale on a consistent basis.

How long have you been a member of the Quiltsy Team?
I have only been a member of the Quiltsy team since January 2016. As a new member, I’ve been so impressed with the skill and compassion of my team members and was pleased to be able to participate in QuiltsyCares as part of this on-line community.
